Sihlekisi Primary School
Royal Malewane
Inspiring an environmentally sustainable future.
Royal Malewane provides educational day trips for pupils and teachers of the local Sihlekisi Primary School. This involves a Game Drive and lunch on the reserve. The Royal Malewane team wants to share their love and passion for nature and conservation with the surrounding community. We aim to expose the children to the importance of eco-tourism and inspire an environmentally sustainable future. We are proud sponsors of the annual school prize giving, where we sponsor trophies and awards to motivate and reward students in addition to upgrading the sports facilities and installing a much anticipated school soccer field in 2020.
My first game drive.
Strange though it may seem, many African children rarely get the chance to see the wildlife that forms part of their collective heritage. That’s the rationale behind our young learner game drive experience programme.
We worked with Sihlekisi Primary School to offer some 51 learners (from Grade 7, therefore aged 12 – 14) and 6 teachers to be taken on a game drive by Royal Malewane guides and trackers. This was the third year of this successful programme aimed at uplifting local communities and promoting conservation. The children have the opportunity to visit a nature reserve and learn about the wildlife, conservation and the ecotourism sector. This naturally leads to lessons and school projects that highlight the importance of protecting wildlife, and explain how local communities benefit from sustainable wildlife tourism. Our aim is also to inspire young people from nearby communities to actively consider careers in ecotourism.
