Safeguarding Our Wildlife Heritage
The illegal rhino horn trade poses a major threat to our continent’s biodiversity, and with 80% of the world’s rhinos located in South Africa, conservation measures are essential in the race against extinction.
Royal Malewane is a founder member of the Greater Kruger Environmental Protection Foundation (GKEPF), a unique conservation initiative. GKEPF’s objective is to protect all wildlife – including the highly targeted rhino populations – in central Kruger and private game reserves across more than 400,000 hectares spanning the Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa and extending into Mozambique. GKEPF adopts a holistic approach to a problem that cannot be solved by individual reserves or lodges acting independently.
GKEPF coordinates comprehensive conservation efforts throughout the region, providing essential ranger training, aerial surveillance, and operational support to combat poaching activities. Through partnerships between government agencies and private stakeholders, substantial resources support continuous planning and monitoring to ensure wildlife preservation.
While good work is already being done by the South African Police Service, Interpol and the FBI to combat the illegal international trade in wildlife, GKEPF plays an active role in ensuring greater resources are allocated to these efforts.
