Theatre
In The Area
When it comes to plays and cabarets, Cape Town’s theatres host both internationally acclaimed shows and local independent performances that will have you tapping your toes and singing along hours after the excitement is over.
The Artscape Theatre Centre
Cape Town’s largest theatre complex, the Artscape has a long 40-year history in the city, where it possesses a scenic spot between Table Mountain and Table Bay, close to the V&A Waterfront and The Silo Hotel.
It houses a 1,400-seat Opera House, home to Seasons of the City’s excellent opera and ballet companies, and is a multifunctional creative arts centre serving performance art, tourism, film and entertainment.
The Baxter Theatre
The Baxter was one of the earliest entertainment hubs to incorporate multiracial performances in a censored Apartheid-era South Africa.
It forged a strong relationship with the University of Cape Town, and today is a complex that puts on vibrant, multicultural shows in its various theatre sizes, and uses its spaces as rehearsal rooms, offices, restaurant and bars.
Kalk Bay Theatre
Something fresh and fun, the Kalk Bay Theatre brings comedy, dance, music and drama to a small stage inside a well-known and much-loved restaurant in Kalk Bay – the Brass Bell.
The restaurant is positioned at the very edge of the sea where waves crash into the outside of the building, making it an incredible venue both for dining and for enjoying the playful entertainment put on by the informal theatre.
