Out and About The City

In The Area

Guided tours of Cape Town are family-friendly, full-day excursions that are enriching and exciting if you would like to spend some time exploring the unique mountain terrain, coastline, marine life, botanical and historical identity of this corner of South Africa.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens

Sprawled on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch safeguards 7,000 species of plant life, most of which are unique to the Cape. Go on a self-guided meander or on a guided tour, which will identify the unique aspects of gardens and share the history behind this World Heritage Site.

Explore the changing exhibitions of African sculpture art displayed in the beautiful garden settings; picnic in the many shady nooks; relax with a book on a bench; or take a break and lunch at the restaurant.

Two Oceans Aquarium

Cape Town’s Two Oceans Aquarium is more than a marine display centre. It is founded on the principles of ocean conservation, education, and helps children and adults understand and fall in love with the mysterious world under the sea.

Walk the 10-metre-long tunnel through the ocean exhibit, try the interactive touch pool and microscope zone, visit the exhilarating Save Our Seas shark exhibit, or the much-loved penguin exhibit. This is a stimulating, multi-sensory experience and an excellent day out for families.

Table Mountain

Table Mountain is a great source of pride to all Capetonians. At 260 million years old, it is older than the Andes, the Rockies, the Himalayas and the Alps. It was even crowned as the seventh natural wonder of the world, reminding us of what a privilege it is to be located in its shade at The Silo Hotel.

You can ask our concierge about various hiking routes up Table Mountain if you’d like to do the climb; alternatively, you can take a ride to the top in the cable car, which is a large, glass, rotating cabin that will lift you to the 1,067-metre-high “table top”.

Robben Island Museum Tour

Robben Island has a multi-layered, 500-year-old history, and is most well known as the island on which Nelson Mandela was held as a political prisoner for 27 years of his life. Spending half a day on a guided tour of the island is an opportunity to learn about South Africa’s scarred political history and to gain perspective about Mandela’s life, his struggle, and his leadership.

The tour leaves from the V&A Waterfront harbour and takes about four hours as a round trip.

Helicopter tour and lunch in Franschhoek

Take off from the V&A Waterfront and land at our sister hotel, La Residence, just in time for lunch on their intimate wine farm. It’s a 30-minute scenic flight to the heart of Franschhoek where vineyards, valleys, and mountains unfold below.

Land and enjoy a fabulous al fresco lunch overlooking the cabernet sauvignon and shiraz vineyards of the 30 acre estate. You might prefer to do a wine tasting in the cellar with one of our expert wine stewards or a local winemaker before you fly back and touch down in time for sunset drinks at The Silo Rooftop.
