Dyer Island Conservation Trust
Founded in 2006 by eco-tourism pioneer Wilfred Chivell, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust operates conservation and research programmes in a critically important marine ecosystem.
The trust protects the largest surviving colonies of the critically endangered African penguin, whose population is at a historic low. They also safeguard globally significant breeding grounds of southern right whales and the world’s most concentrated great white shark populations. Through generous guest support, The Royal Portfolio Foundation has sponsored the rehabilitation and release of numerous penguins.
Responsible for conducting world-class scientific research, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust translates findings into evidence-based conservation initiatives, and educates local communities and visitors to the region.
We have sponsored a dedicated ranger and have funded a Lookout Tower on Dyer Island to help monitor the birds’ condition and refer vulnerable penguins to the rehabilitation centre. After recovery, they are released back to the island.
